RACE #2 THUNDER ON THE HILL, SEPTEMBER 18, 1990

PAUCH IN HYNEMAN  126 MAKES LAST LAP PASS ON STEVE STAMBAUGH TO COLLECT $5,000 IN THUNDER ON THE HILL WIN

BECHTELSVILLE, PA    It was Tuesday night, September 18, 1990 when the second Thunder on the Hill event was presented at the Grandview Speedway.   Driving the Glenn Hyneman 410 Sprint Car, Billy Pauch thrilled a full house with a last lap pass to earn his first Thunder on the Hill victory.   Pauch started fourteenth in a field of twenty-four cars in the 35 lap main event.   Steve Stambaugh driving the Apple Chevrolet was the early race leader quickly being challenged by Fred Rahmer and Chuck Reinert.

Pauch was on a charge and passed Chuck Reinert to take third on lap twenty-four.   One lap later, Reinert made contact with a lapped car and flipped violently numerous times until he launched over the first turn boiler plate exiting the speedway.   Reinert was not injured.  When the safety crew arrived at the car, Chuck commented, “Was this ride good enough to make the front page of the  Program Book ?”  A little humor always makes a rough night a little better.

On the restart, Stambaugh quickly put distance between himself and Pauch who was now racing in second with Rahmer third.

It all came down to a late race restart when Pauch worked his magic using the outside lane to pass Stambaugh and lead the final lap to earn the win.   Stambaugh was second followed by Todd Shaffer, Fred Rahmer and Paul Lotier fifth.  Making up the top ten were  Bobby Weaver, Dave Kelly, Kenny Adams, Robbie Hart and Glenn Fitzcharles.  11 through 24 finishers were  Alan Cole, Dave Hahn, Steve Siegel, Kenny Jacobs, Dan Dietrich, Dave Haight, Chuck Reinert, Mark Kinser, Don Kreitz Jr., John Birosh, Ron Keys, Johnny Mackison, MeMe DeSantis, Bobby Allen, Elmer Stolzfus, Jimmy Nace.   Heat race winners were Fred Rahmer, Mark Kinser, Bobby Weaver, Steve Stambaugh with Johnny Mackison winning the “B” Main.

Looking forward to 2024, Tuesday night, June 11 the Jesse Hockett Classic will return to Thunder on the Hill hosting the opening event of the USAC Non-wing Sprint National Tour, The Eastern Storm.    This popular double-header will find the NASCAR Modifieds sharing the program with race time set for 7:30 PM.

Always a popular event,  Tuesday night, July 2 will host the Hodnett Cup, the $10,000 to win Pennsylvania 410 Sprint Speed Week Series  event as it returns to Grandview Speedway.    The NASCAR Modifieds will once again be on this race  card.  Rico will be looking for the 410 Sprint “hat trick” in 2024.

Although a firm date is not confirmed as yet,  we did get the nod that the High Limit 410 Sprints will also be back on the Hill in 2024.    Rico Abreu won the first event High Limit Sprint event in the Northeast and also won the 2022 Thunder on the Hill Speed Week event.

Also returning in 2024 is the Balls to the Wall 50 for Modifieds and the 602 Sportsman will also be on the program with both divisions taking part in the unique Invert Race format.   The date for this event will be confirmed shortly.
