1993, YEAR 4 OF THUNDER ON THE HILL,  PAUCH WINS CRA & KING OF THE HILL, KAUFFMAN & RAHMER SPLIT TWIN 20’S & THE LIGHTS GO OUT, EASH SCORES FIRST THUNDER WIN

BECHTELSVILLE, PA    1993. . . . . .  The fourth season of Thunder on the Hill opened with the CRA (California Racing Association) non- wing sprints for a $10,000 to win payoff in the 30 lap main event that attracted a field of thirty-eight non- wing sprints. The victory lane celebration looked the same as Billy Pauch parked the John Zemaitis sprinter in the winners’ circle.  Pauch took the win followed by Cary Faas,  Bobby Michnowicz, Frankie Kerr, Bill Brian Jr., Glenn Fitzcharles, Cris Eash, Rip Williams, Mike Kirby, Jack Hewitt, Mike English, Tory Cline, Ron DiDonato, Fred Rahmer, Billy Ellis, Ron Kramer, Mares Stellfox, Rusty McClure, Lealand McSpadden, Todd Gracey, Mike Wells, Bruce Thompson, Bill Case, Ricky Gaunt.

Race two of 1993 had threating weather conditions for the Twin 20’s format for the 410 Sprints.    Keith Kauffman won the opening 20 lap main event.  In the second feature, Fred Rahmer took the win just before lightening knocked out the lights on lap 17.  It was a true Thunder & Lightening event with rain falling as Rahmer celebrated in Victory lane.

Tuesday night, July 13 and event three of 1993 could be one of the wildest 410 sprint events in history.  Fred Rahmer drew the pole and most folks thought it was all over.   But expect the unexpected at Grandview, as Rahmer tangled with a slower car and flipped while leading on lap 14.  At this point, Rahmer had lapped up to the eight place car and that included Billy Pauch who started twenty-first. When Rahmer flipped, it put Pauch back on the lead lap and Todd Shaffer inherited the lead in the Leon Wintermyer 1w.

Shaffer held the lead for just four laps as he flipped in turn four after contact with Cris Eash.   In the meantime, Billy Pauch was making his way back through traffic.  Pauch passed Keith Kauffman for third on lap 27 then passed Bill Brian Jr on lap 31 for second.   In the closing laps, Eash could see the ZEMCO sprinter working the high lane.  Eash held the lead to lap 35 to take the win over Pauch, Brian Jr., Dan Dietrich, Kauffman, Lance Dewease, Dave Kelly, Bob Beidleman, Glenn Fitzcharles,  Dave Hahn.  Eleventh to twenty-four was  Greg Coverdale, Jon Eldreth, Cliff Brian, Tom Steffy, Tracy Readinger, Jimmy Martin, Stew Brown, Todd Shaffer, Bruce Thompson, Glen Clarke, Todd Gracey, Fred Rahmer, Elmer Stoltzfus, Jason Clauss, Mike Wells.

The Mini-Sprints made their first start in a Thunder Series event with Dan Jones of Hanover, PA dominating the field to earn the victory.

The fourth Thunder event of 1993 was the King of the Hill.   The AARN headline said it all,  No One’s Better at Grandview Than Pauch, Wins Third Sprint King of the Hill Title.    Todd Gracey finished second followed by Dave Calaman, Alan Cole, Dan Dietrich, Billy Ellis, Jesse Wentz, Dave Kelly, Glenn Fitzcharles, Cris Eash.  Making up the top twenty-four was Jon Eldreth Tracey Readinger, Elmer Stoltzfus, Bruce Thompson, Jimmy Martin, Dave McGough, Bob Bennett, Ron Kramer, Lenny Krautheim, Greg Coverdale, Steve Smith, Tom Wanner, Bill Brian Jr, Dave Hahn, Bob Swavely, Tim Shaffer.

As year four of Thunder on the Hill comes to an end, thirteen events were presented at Grandview Speedway.
